A tensioner serves two purposes,
to maintain the correct amount of tension on the belt and
to dampen the impulses from the engine as each cylinder fires or as accessories turn on or off.
Good versus Failed Belt Tensioner
The tensioner on the left has lost it dampening ability and is now hammering the accessory immediately next to it which in this case is an alternator. Tensioner on the right shows how a new tensioner on the same system smooths out these impulses.
